Who We Are

We teach 6th-12th graders, Mondays and Tuesdays, from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM. Our main focus is on writing and reading. For Academic Writing and Grammar Essentials, we use IEW curriculum, which introduces students to logical structure while adding style into their writing bit by bit. Students of any age can jump in and start writing–no experience needed. Before you know it, they’ll be writing full essays and reports! We also include Fix-It Grammar in our writing classes.

For Exploring History Through Literature, we look for books that will be both educational and fun to read. By reading a wide range of books, students are more likely to find something they like, and that’s the best way to encourage a love of reading. We believe that for us to understand our world today, we have to understand where we came from. Our history course involves some of everything: some reading, some writing, some discussion, and the most fun part: hands on projects. Above is a photo from when we mummified wooden dolls–and even collected their organs! Remembering history is a challenge, and by bringing in tactile projects and stories that students love, we encourage them to engage more deeply with the lessons.

We have a new class rolling out this year: Reflections and Resilience: Building Emotional Intelligence Through Writing and Literature. This class is a writing-intensive, literature-based course designed to help students develop emotional intelligence, personal insight, and academic voice. Through journaling, creative writing of all kinds (fiction, nonfiction, poetry, etc.), personal narrative, and critical literary analysis, students explore the inner life, build empathy, and strengthen their capacity for self-expression.

Each of our team members have unique strengths they bring to the table. Hannah Lannswift, the founder and director of Two Little Mice, has taught a variety of classes in various co-ops and microschools: everything from a 5th grade journaling and Social Emotional Learning class, to a 10th grade year-long Literary Analysis study focused on The Lord of the Rings books. She also has experience tutoring, leading writing groups, and above all else, writing. She’s been a creative writer her whole life, with three completed novels and several short stories. We never want a student to not be able to join our program because of finances—and we understand that now more than ever, things are tight. Absolutely! We love for parents to be involved, and we are always looking to partner with anyone who is interested. That can mean teaching a class, being available as a substitute, or supervising during our study hall hours. Whatever you want to do, we can make it happen. Feel free to reach out.

We believe in empathy and kindness extended to everyone in our lives, no matter how different from us they may be. We believe in giving students all of the tools they could possibly need in adulthood. That includes critical thinking, deep understanding of their own values, opinions, thoughts and feelings, and the ability to understand others.

Our first goal is internal: guiding teens to become adults who have clear and organized thoughts, who have the necessary tools to present themselves well to the world, who are able to interact with ideas they don’t agree with without adopting them, and who are emotionally intelligent and well balanced.

Our secondary goal is external: building a community space that can act as a third place for teenagers. A place where they can study and interact, build friendships, explore new ideas, and feel at home, all with adult supervision to ensure that the space remains respectful and welcoming.
